Retaliatory operations only target ‘origin’ of anti-Iran attacks: Envoy

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani

Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations has stated that the country’s retaliatory operations only target the places from where the enemies launch their criminal attacks against the Islamic Republic.

Amir-Saeid Iravani made the remarks in a letter sent to the UN chief and the Security Council president on Saturday, on the eighth day of the illegal US-Israeli aggression against Iran.

He said that if a government allows another government to use its territory for invasion against a third government, the act amounts to aggression under 1974 UN General Assembly Resolution 3314.

All governments are required to prevent the armed forces deployed on their soil from waging an act of aggression against other governments, he emphasized, adding that otherwise, the government whose territory is used for the attack bears legal responsibility for the raid.

The envoy also noted that the Islamic Republic has taken appropriate defensive measures against the aggressor regimes’ bases and installations across the region within the framework of the country’s inherent right to self-defense amid the UN’s inability to perform its duties in this regard.

“Nothing can deny or weaken the Islamic Republic’s inherent right to defend itself against the military aggression of the United States and the Israeli regime,” he said.

“Iran’s defensive operations are solely directed at the locations, which are the source or origin of aggressive actions against the Iranian people or are used for supporting such acts.”

Meanwhile, Iravani said that the regional countries are well aware that the presence of the US military bases in their territory did not help maintain security of the region, but only supported crimes against Iranian civilians.

He further expressed Iran’s resolve to preserve and strengthen friendly relations with the countries of the region on the basis of mutual respect and the principle of good neighborliness.

“Iran asserts that its defensive operations against the US bases and military facilities in the region should not be interpreted as hostility or enmity towards the regional countries,” he added.

The US and Israel launched their illegal aggression against Iran on February 28 by assassinating Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty.

So far, at least 1,332 Iranian people have been killed in the terrorist air raids, according to the Red Crescent Society.

Iran began to swiftly retaliate against the unlawful military assault by launching barrages of missile and drone attacks on the Israeli-occupied territories as well as on the US assets in the regional countries.
