Iran congratulates Bangladesh on successful parliamentary elections

Iran says the successful vote shows Bangladesh's determination to decide its own destiny.

Iran has offered congratulations to Bangladesh after the South Asian country held peaceful parliamentary elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the successful organization of parliamentary elections in Bangladesh was a sign of the determination of its people to decide their fate and a major step on the path of national progress.

Baghaei expressed hope that friendly relations and bilateral cooperation between Iran and Bangladesh would expand and deepen more than before under the new government that would be formed after the vote.

The statement came a day after Bangladesh announced the results of its parliamentary elections, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, winning a two-thirds majority while the Jamaat-e-Islami party emerged as the main opposition party.

The votes were held on Thursday alongside a national referendum aimed at reforming state institutions.

Voter turnout was 59.88 percent, according to a Friday statement by the Bangladesh Election Commission, which indicated the elections were among the most peaceful votes held in the country in decades.

The elections came some 20 months after an uprising against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after ruling Bangladesh for 15 years.

As two major Muslim countries in Asia, Iran and Bangladesh have maintained close cultural and religious ties over the past decades.
