Syria's HTS says Israeli regime 'seeking conflict' in region

Syria’s ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) administration says it has pursued a diplomatic approach towards Tel Aviv, while the Israeli regime keeps escalating tensions in the region.

The Arab country's de facto foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, made the remarks on Saturday during a panel discussion on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

He said that Israel is dissatisfied with what he called a “realistic approach” adopted by the HTS-led regime, adding that the occupying regime remains intent on sustaining conflict in the region.

Damascus managed to establish a diplomatic format of interaction with Israel and bring the occupying regime to the negotiating table, he added.

However, Shaibani emphasized, talks between the HTS and Israeli officials would not result in Damascus accepting the imposed status quo in southern Syria.

After the collapse of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, Israel has launched frequent aerial assaults across Syria and ground incursions in the southern part of the country.

Israel has also set up numerous checkpoints in Syria and abducted its citizens. The usurping entity has further expanded control over the occupied Golan Heights, taking over a demilitarized buffer zone in violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

Over the past months, the two sides have held several rounds of negotiations to reach an agreement that would stop Israel’s illegal occupation of Syrian territory and repeated attacks on the Arab country.

Shaibani stressed that any political process must ultimately lead to the pullout of Israeli forces from the areas occupied following the fall of Assad’s government.

“If these negotiations conclude in the way we hope, the outcome should include Israel's withdrawal from the territories it occupied after December 8, 2024, an end to violations of Syrian airspace, and a halt to any further incursions into Syria,” he said.

Syria’s de facto foreign minister further slammed Israel’s “wrong policy” of “overreacting” to perceived threats.

Additionally, he said the HTS militants are “satisfied with what has been achieved” in Syria so far, but acknowledged that significant challenges still remain.
