Hamas senior official Basem Naim has sharply criticized Western media outlets, following reports that the Israeli regime has effectively accepted the Gaza Health Ministry's estimate of approximately 70,000–71,000 Palestinian deaths in the ongoing genocidal war against the people of Gaza.
"The occupation army has adopted the estimates of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, regarding the martyrdom of about 70,000 Palestinians during the war," Naim stated on Thursday.
He said major Western media institutions—including the BBC, CNN, The New York Times, and Fox News— had "blindly defended the 'Israeli' enemy's narrative regarding the numbers of Palestinian martyrs" throughout the "war and genocide."
Naim called for "explicit apologies" from these outlets, the reinstatement of employees dismissed for supporting Palestinian rights, and a serious review of their editorial values and practices.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported the cumulative death toll surpassing 70,000 in late November 2025, with figures climbing to around 71,667 by late January 2026, including injuries exceeding 171,000.
These numbers encompass deaths from Israeli war against the people of Gaza since October 7, 2023, as well as bodies recovered from rubble post-ceasefire.
Recent Israeli media reports, including from Haaretz and The Times of Israel, cited senior military sources indicating that the Israel military now views the Gaza Health Ministry's overall fatality figure as largely accurate—around 70,000 or more.
