Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned German Ambassador Axel Dittmann in response to “interventionist and low-minded remarks” by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding Iran and its armed forces.

The meeting was held Thursday by Alireza Yousefi, assistant to the minister and director‑general for Western Europe at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, where he “conveyed Iran’s strong protest against the interventionist and irresponsible positions of German officials”.

The summon came after Merz claimed that the Iranian government’s “days are numbered” as President Donald Trump renewed threats of attacking Iran for confronting unruly rioters who went amok recently across the country amid the US president’s pledges of support.

Speaking at a news conference, Merz accused the Islamic Republic of holding “onto power through sheer violence and terror against its own population”, saying it has no legitimacy to govern the country.

During the meeting, Yousefi “recalled Germany’s arms support for the Baathist regime in Iraq, including chemical weapons, during the eight-year imposed war against Iran, and its refusal to take any measures to punish those responsible for sending chemical weapons or compensate for the resulting damages.”

He added that “Germany’s claimed concern for human rights is not consistent with its actions.”

Yousefi also referenced “Germany’s comprehensive support for the genocide of Palestinians” and “the low-minded statements of German officials during the 12-day aggressive war by the Zionist regime against Iran” last June, saying that “the German Chancellor has no moral standing to preach about the human rights of Iranians.”

Yousefi further addressed Merz’s support for the push to have the European Union designate Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization.

He emphasized the IRGC’s role, stating: “Any action to label a part of Iran’s official armed forces is a clear violation of international law and an attack on Iran’s national security and sovereignty, and will certainly face a response from Iran.”

The German ambassador said he would relay the points and messages received back to Berlin.
