Iran says it will react decisively to even a limited US attack as it dismisses rumors of back-channel talks amid escalating threats of a potential military confrontation between the two countries.
“…even a limited (military) action would receive a harsh, regretful response,” said Kazem Gharibabadi, who serves as Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal affairs, on Wednesday.
Gharibabadi made the comment in a post on his X account, where he published highlights of his discussions with foreign media representatives earlier in the day in Tehran.
He said he had told foreign journalists that the US military buildup in the region and its escalating threats against Iran were a continuation of previous attempts by the US and Israel to destabilize Iran, including their brief war against the country in June and their support for riots and terrorist acts earlier this month.
“Our enemies have tried war, sanctions, threats, sabotage, and terrorism, but they have not achieved their goals and have been defeated at every stage. We hope that this time they come to their senses,” said the diplomat.
Gharibabadi dismissed media speculation that there have been back-channel negotiations between Iran and the US amid growing threats of military confrontation.
“Currently, there are no ongoing negotiations with the United States, but messages are being exchanged through intermediaries. If they claim to seek negotiations, they must cease their threats,” he said.
US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric about a potential military confrontation with Iran late on Tuesday, telling supporters that “another beautiful armada” of warships was “floating beautifully toward Iran.”
He later published a post on his Truth Social platform, expressing hope that the deployment of the warships would pressure Iran to return to negotiations over its nuclear program.
