Iran's response to riots

Iran’s parliament speaker has warned of a harsh response to the rioters involved in what he called the terrorist war against the country. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said the arrestees in the riots will be punished and those involved in acts of terror will be treated by force. Qalibaf said these are people who set fire to public and private property and even attacked women and children on the streets. He said their actions are a terrorist war, masterminded by the US, to set the stage for military action against Iran. The speaker warned, however, that enemies must know defenders of Iran will finish them off.

Iran massive funeral

Iranians have held new funeral ceremonies for members of the security forces killed in recent riots. Mourners carried Iranian flags and portraits of those killed in the riots triggered by protests against economic problems. Funeral processions were held in several cities, including Yasuj, Kermanshah, Bojnourd, Gachsaran and Fasa. People participating in the ceremonies also denounced nearly two weeks of riots and acts of vandalism in the country. The unrest began about two weeks ago after some shopkeepers and business owners closed their businesses in Tehran to protest the falling value of the national currency. In several areas, demonstrations turned violent, with security forces coming under attack and public property vandalized.

US anti-Trump protests

In the United States, tens of thousands of people marched through the city of Minneapolis to condemn the recent killing of a 37-year-old woman by an immigration agent in the city. The protest was part of nationwide rallies against the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in her car by an ICE officer on Wednesday. Braving cold weather, the demonstrators filled the streets and chanted slogans against the government’s crackdown on immigrants. They also demanded justice for Good. Many cities across the country, including the capital, Washington, were also the scene of such demonstrations, titled “ICE Out for Good”. In Washington, organizers condemned the federal government’s actions against immigrants, accusing it of political repression. They said the Minnesota woman has become a symbol for immigrant rights advocates nationwide. Demonstrators also took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles in protest of the ICE operations across the country. The protesters are demanding an end to expanded ICE deployments, which are part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
