Iranian boys’ team crowned champions at World U-21 Taekwondo

The Iranian boys' team wins the championship at the first edition of the 2025 World U21 Taekwondo Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Iranian boys’ team claimed the championship title at the inaugural 2025 World U21 Taekwondo Championships after winning three gold medals, one silver, and two bronze.

The tournament, held in Nairobi, Kenya, began on Wednesday with the participation of 452 taekwondo practitioners from 75 countries and concluded on Saturday with the final contests in the men’s −68 kg and −78 kg categories and the women’s −46 kg and −62 kg categories.

On the final day, Iran was represented by Matin Rezaei, Mohammad Alizadeh, and Saina Karimi. Alizadeh secured a silver medal, while Rezaei earned bronze.

Under the leadership of Majid Aflaki, the Iranian boys’ team topped the standings with three gold medals (Abolfazl Zandi, Radin Zeinali, and Amir Reza Gholami), one silver (Mohammad Alizadeh), and two bronze (Matin Rezaei and Amir Mohammad Ashrafi).

Turkey finished second with two golds and one silver, followed by Kazakhstan with two golds and one bronze. Egypt, Bulgaria, and India occupied the next positions.

Iran’s six-member girls’ team, coached by Mahrouz Saei, finished the tournament with one gold (Mobina Ne’matzadeh) and one bronze (Hasti Mohammadi), placing fourth behind Turkey, South Korea, and Morocco.

At the end of the competition, Aflaki was honored as Best Coach, while Zandi received the award for Most Technical Taekwondo Athlete.

In taekwondo competitions, results are calculated separately for the boys’ and girls’ divisions, with the top teams receiving championship trophies.

However, in the combined men’s and women’s ranking published on the World Taekwondo Federation’s website, Iran’s national team ranked first overall, ahead of Turkey in second place and South Korea in third.
