Floodwaters continued to rise on Sunday in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, prompting authorities to evacuate thousands of residents from low-lying areas, officials said.

At least 212 people on the island nation have been killed by Cyclone Ditwa, authorities said, with 191 others missing and more than half a million affected nationwide.

Government officials have urged residents to heed warnings and evacuation orders.

Flood levels are increasing in some areas, and I am requesting people in those areas to be vigilant and evacuate their homes, said Janaka Kumara, district secretary for Colombo.

Visuals from the city's flooded streets showed army vehicles navigating submerged roads, rescuers using boats, and residents wading through waterlogged roads.

More than 78,000 people have been moved to nearly 800 relief centres, mostly set up in schools, the Disaster Management Centre said on Saturday, November 29.

Thousands of police, navy personnel and army troops are distributing food, clearing roads and moving trapped families to safety, say officials.
