Iran military readiness
Iran’s Army chief says the country possesses the readiness to deliver a decisive and crushing response wherever its national interests require. In a speech commemorating Iran's Navy Day, Major General Amir Hatami celebrated the force's historical bravery and outlined the country's growing naval power as a cornerstone of national and regional security. He positioned Iran as a self-reliant nation that has ingeniously transformed sanctions and threats into opportunities for innovation, achieving significant prowess in its defense and marine industries. The General slammed the US and Israel for attempting to disrupt burgeoning regional cooperation and asserted Iran's role as a guarantor of stability. He said Iran's military doctrine is rooted in "active defense and smart deterrence." General Hatami emphasized that sanctions have served as a catalyst for creativity and accelerated advancement in Iran's scientific progress.
Israel's West Bank crimes
The United Nations says violence by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank has surged over the past two years, leaving more than a thousand Palestinians dead. It says there’s almost been no accountability. Laurence also cited a recent disturbing incident in the city of Jenin, where Israeli forces were filmed shooting dead two Palestinian men trying to surrender. The UN has already called for independent, prompt, and effective investigations into the Israeli killing of Palestinians, and for those responsible to be held fully accountable. Hundreds of Israeli soldiers, backed by armored vehicles, have recently been carrying out sweeping raids in the occupied West Bank. That's the largest military deployment there since last month’s ceasefire in Gaza.
Southeast Asia flood
The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Southeast Asia has climbed past 370 as rescue and clean-up operations continue. Indonesia has reported more than 200 fatalities, with over 100 people still missing in the Sumatra island. In southern Thailand, water levels reached 3 meters and killed 162 people in one of the worst floods in a decade. The country’s prime minister has apologized for the destruction caused by the floods after public criticism over the flood response systems. More than 40,000 people have taken shelter in evacuation centers there. Malaysia confirmed two deaths, while more than 6,000 stranded nationals have been rescued. A tropical storm has exacerbated conditions and the tolls in Indonesia and Thailand rank among the highest in those countries in recent years.
