In tour of South Khorasan Province, the most interesting was the number of citadels, castles, and fortresses. Even the modern-day city of Birjand is built around an ancient fortress.
Birjand Castle was technically a fortress, with knights stationed inside to defend the city and the people in case of an attack by Turkmens and Uzbeks in particular during the Safavid era.
It is said that the people were able to enter the fortress through hidden underground tunnels.
And then Shirvan, the second largest city in North Khorasan Province, situated in northeastern Iran. A place known for its ancient history, rich culture, and beautiful handicrafts as well as its hospitable people.
