Venezuela has denounced the United States for its military escalation in the Caribbean and along its coastline during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
During an emergency UNSC session on Friday, Venezuela’s UN ambassador, Samuel Moncada, stated that US military actions in the Caribbean threaten peace in Venezuela and across Latin America.
The meeting was convened at Venezuela’s request to protest what it described as a “serious escalation of aggressions and an unprecedented military deployment” by Washington in the Caribbean.
Moncada added that US forces recently targeted four vessels in the Caribbean, killing 21 civilians without offering identification or evidence of their alleged criminal conduct.
“These are not isolated incidents; they represent a growing threat to the peace and security of our nation and the entire region,” Moncada declared.
He warned that the presence of US military forces just kilometers from Venezuela’s coast has intensified fears of an imminent armed conflict.
He urged the UNSC to intervene to prevent further escalation, stating that Washington has targeted Venezuelans “inside and outside our territory,” labeling them a threat “without any evidence.”
Russia, China censure US military buildup in Caribbean
Fu Tsung and Vasily Nebenzia, the Chinese and Russian permanent representatives to the UN, respectively, voiced concern over Washington’s expanding military presence near Venezuela during the same session.
Nebenzia, who presides over the UNSC for October, said the US operations, presented by Washington as anti–drug trafficking missions, actually disguise preparations for regime change in Caracas.
“Venezuela is under unprecedented pressure and the threat of military intervention is escalating every day,” the diplomat stated, calling the situation a direct danger to regional and global stability.
Fu, for his part, urged the United States to end its confrontational stance toward Venezuela and instead work with the international community to maintain regional peace.
“We call on the United States to immediately cease appropriate actions in order to avoid further escalation of the situation,” he said.
Fu also cautioned Washington against using false pretexts, particularly the alleged fight against drug trafficking, to justify moves that endanger international navigation and safety.
The US military escalation began in August and involves three destroyers, anti-submarine aircraft, battleships, nuclear submarines, and F-35 squadrons.
Since then, US forces have attacked several vessels, killing dozens of Venezuelan nationals while claiming they were drug traffickers transporting narcotics to the United States.
In response, the Venezuelan government has declared a national emergency, reinforced its armed forces, and mobilized its national militia to counter any potential military aggression from Washington.
