Michigan mass shooting leaves 6 dead, including shooter, and one critically injured
Six people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and another person was critically injured in a mass shooting on Friday in rural Missaukee County near Cadillac in northern Michigan, Michigan State Police said.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman of Lake City, was found dead in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township, about five miles north of where the first victims were discovered.
Police had not released the ages or genders of the victims on Friday evening as authorities worked to notify their families.
The shooting involved at least three separate crime scenes across Missaukee County, which has a population of about 15,000 and is located roughly 25 miles west of Houghton Lake. Police continued investigating late Friday, with LaChance Road at Rosted Road remaining closed.
Troopers responded to a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township at about 11:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. They found three people dead and another person critically injured. The surviving victim was taken to a hospital, police said.
Investigators determined that Hickman had fled before officers arrived, prompting a search involving Michigan State Police aviation and canine units. During the search, officers discovered a fourth body inside another home in Missaukee County.
Police later located Hickman’s vehicle in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake and found his body nearby. A fifth alleged victim was also discovered in the wooded area, according to authorities.
Court records show Hickman had recently been divorced. In a 2025 case, a judge wrote that allegations of domestic violence involving both sides of the marriage were central to the proceedings.
Hickman was also convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of children in connection with a 2010 criminal case, according to 28th Circuit Court records. He was sentenced to 365 days in jail and ordered to pay $1,775 in costs and fees.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The shooting marks the second mass killing in Michigan in three weeks. On July 24, seven members of a family in Grand Haven Township were killed in a shooting.
Authorities said the father killed his wife and six children, ages 5 to 15, before dying by suicide. The bodies were discovered inside the family’s home after it was set on fire.
