Iran slams G7 statement on reinstating snapback sanctions a ‘distortion of reality’

Iran has condemned the G7's endorsement of a move to reimpose terminated UN sanctions against Tehran, labeling it as “deceitful” and a “distortion of reality.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Thursday that the G7’s support for the “illegal and unjustified” move by the United States and three European countries to reinstate terminated UN Security Council sanctions against Iran amounted to an endorsement of a violation of international law.

In a statement on Wednesday, G7 Foreign Ministers and the High Representative of the EU welcomed the E3 activation of the snapback reimposing United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions and other restrictions against Iran.

Baghaei underscored that this stance by the G7 cannot change the “illegal and unjustified” nature of the action, which he said abused the JCPOA's dispute resolution mechanism.

On September 19, the 15-member Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have prevented the re-imposition of UN sanctions on Iran after the E3 triggered the “snapback” mechanism and accused Tehran of failing to comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

A subsequent resolution, which sought to grant a six-month extension to both the JCPOA and Resolution 2231, also failed to pass at the Security Council on Friday.

The spokesman described the G7's claim that the E3 and US had repeatedly offered Iran “diplomatic avenues in good faith as a “complete lie.”

He stated this was a “distortion of the truth,” recalling the US- Israeli military aggression against Iran and a subsequent direct US strike on its nuclear facilities in June, which occurred during ongoing diplomatic negotiations.

He noted that the US is the “main cause of the current situation” due to its “illegal” 2018 withdrawal from the nuclear deal and subsequent violations of international law.

He further slammed the E3 for their “major non-implementation” of the accord and for ignoring Iran's diplomatic efforts “with obvious malice,” denouncing their support for military aggression on Iran's nuclear sites.

The Iranian diplomat described the G7's approach to nuclear non-proliferation as hypocritical, pointing to their indifference toward Israel's nuclear arsenal.

“These seven countries, due to their fraudulent and irresponsible actions towards the rule of law, international peace and security, lack any moral authority to advise others,” he noted.
