E3 'legally baseless move'

Iran has issued a stern warning to those countries that would implement the re-imposed UN sanctions, saying any such move will be met with reciprocal measures from Iran. The Iranian parliament speaker added, the sanctions outlined in the UN Security Council's resolutions hold little significance compared to the US sanctions already in place. Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry categorically rejected the UN restoration of sanctions as legally baseless and unjustifiable. The ministry noted the sanctions are legally non-binding for Iran and other member states. It said the UK, Germany and France have violated the UNSC Resolution 2231 by triggering the so-called snapback mechanism under pressure from the US. The ministry also reiterated that all restrictions imposed on Iran’s nuclear activities must be considered null and void after the expiration of the resolution, on October 18.

Israel Gaza onslaught

In Gaza, a two-and-a-half-month old boy has died of malnutrition and lack of treatment in Khan Younis. This comes amid the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocide and brutal siege. At least 40 people have been killed since dawn, including a child in a bombardment on the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City. Israeli assaults also included a strike on western Gaza’s Al-Naser district, which killed at least five. Over a dozen more were killed in strikes on houses in central Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli tanks are pushing deeper into residential areas of Gaza City. Local health authorities say they are overwhelmed and cannot respond to dozens of desperate calls for help. In the past 24 hours alone, six people seeking aid were killed. This raises the death toll to over 66,000 people since the regime began its genocidal war in October 2023.

Trump Portland deployment

The US president has authorized the deployment of troops to the city of Portland and granted approval for the use of force to suppress demonstrations outside immigration detention facilities there. In a social media post, Donald Trump said he has directed the secretary of war to send armed forces to deal with, in his words, domestic terrorists. He has called Portland a war-ravaged city. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has condemned Trump’s move as an authoritarian takeover of the state’s largest city. Portland and other major US cities have seen months of protests against Trump’s crackdown on immigrants as well as mass detention and deportation of illegal migrants. The protesters occasionally block entrances to Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices. Trump has already sent troops to Chicago and Los Angeles and has threatened similar moves in Baltimore, New Orleans.
