A leading Israeli human rights organization says Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the besieged Gaza Strip, held in Israeli jails, is in a “serious and alarming” condition.
In a series of posts on social media platform X on Thursday, Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) said that during its visit to Abu Safiya, who has been held in Israeli jails since December 2024, “a serious and alarming picture emerged”.
“Since his arrest, Dr. Abu Safiya has lost approximately 25 kilograms. He suffers from serious scabies and heart problems but is not receiving any medical treatment,” the group said, noting that he has not been brought before a judge, subjected to an investigation, or informed about the reason for his arrest since March.
Israel’s prison authority ignored Abu Safiya’s request to be examined by a doctor because of his heath issues, according to the report.
Citing the doctor’s testimony, the group said detainees are subjected to violence perpetrated by prison guards during frequent cell searches, and receive very small amounts of food.
Many of them have lost a significant amount of weight, and they have been held in dirty clothes for months, the group added.

Six months ago, PHRI documented the arbitrary detention of more than 100 Gazan medical personnel.
“All detainees are currently being held without charge, some for more than a year, in violation of due process and in serious breach of the right to health of Gaza's population,” the group said.
It called for “the immediate release of all Palestinian healthcare workers detained unlawfully by Israel”.
“It is imperative that the international community act to ensure their freedom, dignity, and ability to serve those in desperate need,” PHRI added.
Israel launched the campaign of genocide in Gaza in October 2023, after Palestinian resistance fighters waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the Zionist entity in response to the regime's decades-long atrocities against the Palestinians.
The regime has so far killed more than 65,540 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in Gaza, according to the health ministry of the besieged territory.
