Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel’s campaign in Gaza as genocidal, describing the regime as a serious threat to stability and peace across West Asia.
Erdogan urged the international community on Tuesday to take immediate action to stop the ongoing bloodshed against Palestinians, calling for an end to Israel’s attacks.
“This is the lowest point of humanity,” he told world leaders. “There is no war in Gaza; there are no two sides. This is an invasion, a genocide, a policy of massacre.”
Calling the genocide an “unparalleled catastrophe in human history,” he displayed images of malnourished Palestinian children and women to the UN assembly.
“In front of every one of us, genocide has been going on in Gaza for more than 700 days … For the last 23 months, Israel has killed one child every hour. These are not numbers; each one is a life, an innocent person,” Erdogan stated.
“Every day, 2.5 million Gazans living within 365 square kilometers (141 square miles) are displaced, forced to move to another area,” he added.
The Turkish President urged world leaders to stand with the oppressed Palestinians for the sake of humanity, arguing that Israeli assaults have destroyed fundamental human rights, including the rights of children and women, freedom of expression, equality, and justice.
“Humanity has not witnessed such brutality in the last century … Can there be peace in a world where children die from hunger and lack of medicine?” he asked.
Erdogan demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged strip, and accountability for what he described as Israel’s “genocide crew.”
He also condemned Israel for exporting its aggression beyond Gaza and the occupied West Bank to Syria, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, and even Qatar, warning that such actions endanger the stability of the entire region.
“Obsessed with the idea of a promised land, the Israeli regime is undermining regional peace and humanity’s common achievements with its expansionist policy,” Erdogan said, adding that [the Israeli] prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu “has no intent for peace or freeing [captives].”
The Turkish President noted that since the Israeli regime began its genocidal assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023, it has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians and buried almost 200,000 under rubble, most of them children and women.
