Countering unilateral sanctions

In an address to the SCO’s summit in China’s Tianjin, Masoud Pezeshkian proposed a Special Accounts and Settlement Systems imitative for closer financial cooperation among members. As part of the initiative, the president proposed greater use of national currencies to reduce reliance on the US dollar in intra-organizational trade. Pezeshkian also proposed creation of financial infrastructure, based on national digital currencies, for secure payments as well as a currency swap fund to support members, exposed to sanctions or financial crises. The proposal comes against the backdrop of the SCO’s global financial standing. The organization represents nearly 36 % of the global GDP and 40 % of the world population.
