The Israeli regime is devising plans to detain Greta Thunberg under “terrorist-level conditions” after the Swedish activist departed from Spain on Sunday aboard the largest flotilla to date headed for Gaza.
The initiative aims to break the ongoing siege of Gaza and the humanitarian crisis resulting from the genocide.
Thunberg is accompanied by notable figures, including actor Liam Cunningham and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, as part of what they call the “largest solidarity mission” in history.
On September 4, dozens of ships are expected to depart for Gaza from Tunisia and various Mediterranean ports, joining the Global Sumud Flotilla.
According to the newspaper Israel Hayom, the regime of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to detain activists in the harsh conditions of the Ktzi’ot and Damon detention centers for women. Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's proposal includes seizing numerous vessels to establish a “maritime force for police operations.”
Sources close to Ben-Gvir indicated that after spending several weeks in detention, the activists would come to regret their decision to join the flotilla, stating, “We must eliminate their appetite for another attempt.”
Israeli regime forces intensified their offensive on Gaza City and are stopping the deliveries of food and basic supplies to the Palestinian territory, deliberately causing a full-blown famine there.
Israel has enforced a blockade on Gaza's waters to create famine and kill Palestinians. The regime has exacerbated famine conditions within the Gaza Strip by blocking humanitarian aid as part of its military strategies.
Before departing from Barcelona, Thunberg spoke to Press TV about the flotilla's mission to “deliver humanitarian aid, break Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza, and establish a people’s humanitarian corridor.”
She mentioned that over 26,000 people have signed up to participate in the mission, stating, “This project is part of a global uprising of people standing up."
Thunberg added that when our governments fail to act, the people will rise, and we cannot stand idly by in the face of the atrocities and complicity in the genocide occurring in Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of delegations from 44 countries, will be joined by more ships from ports in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia in the coming days, on its route from the western end of the Mediterranean to the Gaza Strip, according to organizers.
They expect around 20 vessels in total once all are together.
Hours before their departure, boats flying Palestinian flags began docking in line at a pier in Barcelona, while hundreds of supporters wearing keffiyehs chanted “Free Palestine!” and “Boycott Israel!”
In June, Thunberg was part of the Madleen flotilla alongside 11 other activists. Still, they were intercepted by the Israeli navy 115 miles west of Gaza, where they received water and food before being taken to Ashdod, Israel.
Israel's foreign ministry said, “Unauthorized attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.”
Thunberg, who was later deported to Paris, claimed the activists were “kidnapped in international waters.”
She acknowledged the risks of their mission, saying their goal was to reach Gaza and distribute aid.
Dozens of boats carrying hundreds of activists from as many as 44 nations are set to take part in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
It is the latest and largest Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) mission to set sail for Gaza in an attempt to break Israel’s US-backed genocidal siege on the embattled Palestinian territory.
Earlier this month, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that famine is occurring in the Gaza Governorate as of August 15.
Currently, over half a million Palestinians face starvation; by next month, the number could exceed 640,000.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has recorded five deaths due to the Israeli-imposed famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, including two children, bringing the total number of hunger-related deaths to 322, including 121 children.
