Iran's president offers aid to Pakistan after devastating floods

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran is ready for any cooperation with Pakistan to send humanitarian aid to the country following the worst flooding in the eastern province of Punjab in four decades.

In a phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday, Pezeshkian expressed Iran’s sympathy with the Pakistani government and nation over the devastating floods.

The floods in Punjab began on Monday when an abnormal amount of rain triggered sudden water releases from Indian dams on the Sutlej, Chenab and Ravi rivers.

The Director General of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority, Irfan Ali Kathi, said that since then, nearly 300,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas.

He added that 20 people have died in this week’s floods in Punjab, raising the nationwide death toll to 820 since flash floods in late June.

Pezeshkian said Iran and Pakistan enjoy historical bonds and fraternal relations and expressed his appreciation to Islamabad for the gracious hospitality and constructive negotiations during his recent visit early in August.

The Pakistani prime minister, for his part, thanked the Iranian president for his expression of solidarity in this hour of pain and suffering, which shows the depth of friendship between the two countries.

Sharif said Tehran and Islamabad have always stood and will continue to stand by each other in difficult times.

He also requested that his warm regards and good wishes be conveyed to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the noble Iranian nation.

The Iranian president and Pakistani prime minister agreed to hold a meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, to discuss bilateral and multilateral agreements.
