In Iran’s holy city of Mashhad, the final days of the Islamic lunar month of Safar have drawn millions of pilgrims from across the country and around the world.
Many, fresh from the Arba’een pilgrimage in Iraq, have extended their journey to join four days of mourning — beginning with the passing of Prophet Mohammad and ending with the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza. This year’s turnout is unprecedented, with the spirit and hospitality echoing the famed Arba’een walk. Gisoo Misha Ahmadi reports.
