Iran, Azerbaijan emphasize need to ‘open new chapter’ in bilateral relations
Iran's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Abbas Mousavi says Tehran and Baku have emphasized the need to “open a new chapter” in relations between the two neighbors, following efforts by the two sides to resolve misunderstandings.
Mousavi made the remarks in a post on X, after meeting with Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant of the Azerbaijani President in the capital Tehran on Saturday.
"In my recent meeting with Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant of the Azerbaijani President, we reviewed the latest developments in the South Caucasus region and bilateral relations between Iran and Azerbaijan," he wrote.
"We emphasized the need to open a new chapter in the relations between the two neighbors," the envoy added.
On Thursday, an Azerbaijani delegation traveled to Tehran to prepare for the reopening of their embassy in the Islamic Republic following diplomatic tensions over the past year.
In an interview with Baku TV, Abbas Mousavi praised the “historical background” between the two neighboring countries and stressed that they would not allow “misunderstandings” to persist and sour their ties.
He also said the activities of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran will “soon” resume while announcing that a delegation has traveled to Tehran to make the preparations.
Mousavi further underlined that Tehran and Baku are drawing up “large economic projects” to bring about “greater economic entanglement” of the two neighbors.
Azerbaijan’s relations with Iran were strained in January last year following an attack on the country’s embassy in Tehran, which prompted Baku to close it and evacuate staff over what it called a “terrorist act.”
An initial Iranian investigation found that the attack was motivated by “personal and family-related problems”.
