Iran's embassy in Baku has extended its sincere congratulations to Ilham Aliyev on his re-election as Azerbaijan's president.

In a post on its X account on Wednesday, the embassy expressed confidence that a new page will open in the relations between the two brotherly Muslim countries in the coming period.

Aliyev was re-elected as Azerbaijan's president on Wednesday for a fifth consecutive term, after official results showed the incumbent received 92.1 percent of votes already counted.

Mazahir Panahov, head of the Central Election Commission, said Aliyev got 92.1 percent of the vote from 54.47% of ballots counted.

"The Azerbaijani people have elected Ilham Aliyev as the country's president," Panahov told a press conference, adding that the turnout was 67.7 percent.

Aliyev's closest competitor and independent candidate Zahid Oruj received 2.2 percent.

About 6.5 million people were eligible to vote, including those abroad.
