Gaza ceasefire

A four-day truce has come into effect in the Gaza Strip, the first major reprieve in seven weeks of conflict in the coastal sliver. The ceasefire came into force at 0500 GMT. However, there are reports of Israeli tanks shelling eastern Khan Younis and Rafah. The Israeli military has also used live fire and tear gas to stop Palestinians in southern Gaza from returning to their homes in the north. As part of the ceasefire deal, the first group of Israeli captives consisting of 13 people are set to be released later on Friday. 39 Palestinian prisoners will also be released on the first day. Several aid trucks have already entered the besieged territory. Palestinian resistance group Hamas says 230 trucks are expected to enter Gaza on Friday. The brief hiatus in the war follows 48 days of relentless Israeli airstrikes that killed nearly 15,000 Palestinians and displaced countless more.

The secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Resistance Movement says the Israeli regime has failed to achieve its stated goals in the Gaza war. In a televised address, Ziyad Nakhalah added the current prisoner swap deal with Tel Aviv will finally lead to another agreement that will force the regime to release all Palestinian prisoners. He said the resistance front will continue fighting and prevent the enemy from reaching its objectives. Nakhalah noted the October 7 Operation al-Aqsa Flood has caused an earthquake within the Israeli regime and shed light on the Western support for Israel. He also thanked resistance groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen for courageously supporting Palestinians. Nakhalah underlined that those who speak of governing Gaza should think of protecting their own people instead.

Iran pro-Palestine rallies

Members of Iran’s volunteer Basij Force have held parades across the country in solidarity with Palestinians, particularly the residents of Gaza. The march in the capital, Tehran, alone brought together some 50,000 Basij forces. The rallies in the capital are being held on iconic Enghelab Street, which means Revolution Street. Participants have marched toward the University of Tehran where Friday Prayers are regularly held every week. The ralliers have voiced support for Gaza residents and condemned what they describe as the Israeli regime’s genocide against people in the besieged territory. The nationwide parades mark National Basij Week in Iran.
