Will Africa cut ties with Israel?
50 years ago, after the October 1973 war between the Israeli apartheid regime and some Arab armies, most African countries decided to cut off ties with the Israeli regime in solidarity with Arab countries.
The move came after the Organization for African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union, called on member states to break off relations with the Israeli apartheid regime.
Additionally, the OAU, in its 12th ordinary session held in Kampala in 1975, became the first international body to recognize on a large scale the inherent racism in Israel's Zionist ideology.
In February this year, a senior Israeli regime diplomat was forcefully removed from the African Union's annual summit in Ethiopia, after the regime's observer status at the bloc was suspended.
Now, amid the genocidal war that Israel has been waging against the Gaza Strip, there are growing calls for African countries to take a similar decision they took 50 years ago. So will the African Union once again lead the continent in breaking ties with the apartheid Israeli regime?
