Palestinian resistance 'legitimate right'

The Hamas chief in the Gaza Strip says armed resistance against Israel remains a legitimate right for Palestinians under international law, as long as the regime’s occupation continues. Khalil al-Hayya says Hamas considers a political settlement possible only after the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Hayya was speaking on the 38th anniversary of establishment of Hamas. He said the movement supports immediate formation of an independent Palestinian committee to administer Gaza under the truce deal with Israel. But he said foreign forces’ role must be limited to monitoring the ceasefire along Gaza’s borders, rejecting all forms of foreign control over Gaza’s internal affairs. He also called for full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, including its requirement for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza and Israeli military withdrawal.

Slamming US interventionist policies

Iran says the US should be held accountable for its interference in other countries, as Washington’s meddlesome polices have brought crimes to the West Asia region. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said such US policies has led to the loss of millions of lives in the region. He said a recent acknowledgment by a US special envoy to the region proves that Washington’s policies have failed. Baqaei made the remarks during his weekly presser in Tehran. He also called diplomacy one of the tools that Iran uses to safeguard its national interests but the Islamic Republic is facing parties that attach no importance to diplomacy. He underlined that Iran’s armed forces are fully prepared to counter any adventurism.

Venezuela anti-US protest

In Venezuela, people have taken to the streets of Miranda state to protest a recent seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker by the United States military. Waiving Venezuelan flag, demonstrators condemned the US seizure of the oil tanker as piracy. They also declared their commitment to defending their homeland and independence against foreign intervention. Protesters said the seizure of the tanker reveal the US’s true intention towards Venezuela. On Wednesday, the US seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela in an operation that Washington justified over sanctions. It is part of a pressure campaign the US has launched against the south American country since September. It has deployed more than 15-thousand troops, warships and fighter jets in the Caribbean under the pretext of fighting drug traffickers. Venezuela, however, says the military buildup is aimed at toppling the Venezuelan government to gain control of its oil resources.
