Iran’s sovereignty over islands

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani has rejected a joint statement by Japan and some Arab countries regarding Iran’s sovereignty over three islands in the Persian Gulf. He was referring to a statement issued at the end of the third session of the Ministerial Meeting of the Arab-Japan Political Dialogue in Cairo, Egypt. The statement calls for talks between Iran and the UAE on the sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. Kanani said that part of the statement lacks any political or legal value. He rejected it as a violation of the principle of non-interference in domestic affairs of countries and respecting their territorial integrity. Tehran has repeatedly rejected the UAE’s claims over the islands, saying they have historically been an inseparable part of Iran and will remain so.

Repression in Myanmar

Over two years after a military coup in Myanmar, the UN chief has painted a bleak picture of the current situation and the prospects for democracy in the country. This is Antonio Guterres speaking before a meeting with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Indonesia. Guterres called on the junta in Myanmar to free all detained leaders and political prisoners and open the door toward the full restoration of democratic rule. Myanmar has been ravaged by deadly violence and military crackdown since a coup in February 2021. The UN chief also called for creation of conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingya Muslim refugees to Myanmar. Over one million Rohingya remain in Bangladesh, in the world's largest refugee camp. They fled Myanmar in 2017 during a crackdown by Myanmar’s military and Buddhist groups.

US-Armenia war games

Russia says Washington’s move to supply Kiev with depleted-uranium ammunition is a criminal act. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the decision reflects Washington’s "shocking" disregard for environmental consequences of the use of such weapons. Russia's embassy in Washington also reacted to the decision, calling it a clear sign of inhumanity. It also said the US is quote-prepared to fight not only to the last Ukrainian but also to do away with entire generations. Earlier on Wednesday, the United States said it is sending depleted-uranium ammunition to Kiev. That is part of a new arms package worth up to one billion dollars. It also includes anti-tank missiles, artillery and mortar rounds, tactical air navigation systems, and ammunition for air defense systems.
