Palestinian killed

Israeli forces have killed yet another Palestinian in the occupied West Bank. A young man hit by Israeli fire near the city of Jenin hours ago has succumbed to injuries. 

BRICS Summit

A bloc of five major emerging economies, known as BRICS, is due to convene a summit in Johannesburg later today. The South African president will host his Chinese and Brazilian counterparts, the Indian prime minister, the Russian foreign minister as well as some 50 leaders from other countries. The BRICS is expected to consider granting new memberships during a three-day summit, as over 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the bloc. They include Iran which applied for membership last year. Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has also been invited to attend the gathering in Johannesburg. South Africa currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the group which represents 40 percent of the world’s population across three continents. Its members’ economies also make up a quarter of global GDP. 

Russia-Ukraine war

The Russian Defense Ministry says two Ukrainian drones flying over the Moscow region have been shot down. The ministry said the drones fell in two regions near the capital, causing minor damage to buildings and cars. No injuries have been reported. Flights were also briefly suspended to and from three Moscow airports. The ministry also said that two other drones were intercepted and brought down over the Bryansk region that borders Ukraine. Kiev has increased drone attacks on Russian territory in recent weeks, mostly targeting Moscow. Russia in response has conducted drone strikes too, including on the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
