Hajj pilgrimage

Day three of the annual Hajj rituals has begun in Saudi Arabia where over two and a half million Muslims from around the globe have converged to perform the religious rites. Pilgrims are now performing a symbolic stoning of the devil as part of the religious event. They will continue the stoning before returning to Mecca to pray at the Grand Mosque. During the Hajj, pilgrims do a series of rites, including circumambulation of the Ka’aba. The end of the Hajj coincides with Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, also celebrated by Muslims elsewhere. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It must be undertaken by every Muslim at least once in their lifetime, as long as they are healthy enough and have the means to do so.

Palestinian response

Palestinians have fired a rocket from the occupied West Bank city of Jenin toward a nearby Israeli settlement. The Israeli military confirmed the rocket launch on Monday, saying the strike caused no casualties. Israeli media also published footage showing the moment a Jenin-based resistance group called the Al-Ayyash brigade fired the rocket at an Israeli settlement. What can also be seen in the video is a note which reads 'The West Bank is a shield for al-Quds'. It was for the first time Palestinians had fired a projectile from Jenin toward the Israeli settlement. It came almost a week after the regime’s forces raided Jenin, killing at least 7 Palestinians. The attack was the latest in Israeli raids on the occupied city in recent months.

France clash

French police in Paris are mobilizing troops in anticipation of more violence over the fatal shooting of a teenager by an officer. On Tuesday night, police clashed with protesters angry at the death of a 17-year-old boy in the suburb of Paris. He was fatally shot in Nanterre earlier that day. According to the local prosecutor's office, the teenager failed to comply with an order to stop his car. But a video showed two cops leaning on the car and an officer firing toward the driver as the vehicle pulled away. The officer has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter but has not been charged yet. France has experienced numerous protest rallies and clashes in recent months, mostly over the economic crisis and a contentious pension reform.
