The Honduran government has imposed a curfew after 22 people were killed in separate attacks amid a resurgence of violence in the country.

The incident took place when armed gunmen opened fire on Saturday night killing 11 people and injuring 3 others in the northern city of Choloma.

An official source told Reuters there had been at least 11 other deaths on the same day in separate episodes across the northern Valle de Sula zone, including in the key industrial city of San Pedro Sulay.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced a 15-day curfew in Choloma between 9 pm and 4 am, effective immediately. San Pedro Sula, will be put under curfew from July 4.

“Multiple operations, raids, captures and checkpoints are initiated," Castro said

The president added that the government is also offering a cash reward of $32,707 to people who help identify and capture those responsible for the killings in Choloma.

This recent attack follows the deadly violence that took place earlier this week leading to the killing of  46 women in a prison in Tamara, about 30 miles (50km) northwest of the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.

Honduras has been engulfed by widespread gang violence leading to the displacement of entire communities.

Parts of Honduras have been put in a state of partial emergency since December last year in an attempt to contain the surging violence.

According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, 2.3 million people are in need of aid in the violence-stricken Central American country.
