Iran says supports rule of law in Russia amid Wagner mutiny

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kan'ani

Iran says it supports the rule of law in the Russian Federation in the wake of a mutiny led by the chief of the Wagner group.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kan'ani said on Saturday the recent developments in Russia were a domestic issue.

Wagner is a paramilitary organization that has been fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.

In an audio message posted on Telegram on Friday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner chief, said the "evil which the Russian military leadership carries must be stopped.”

That prompted an emergency televised address by President Vladimir Putin to the nation on Saturday.

The "armed mutiny," Putin said, was treason. The president pledged that anyone who had taken up arms against the Russian military would be punished.

"This is a stab in a back to our country, to our nation," Putin said. "What we have been faced with is exactly betrayal. Extravagant ambitions and personal interests led to treason."

Prigozhin claims the Russian military has struck his men.

'Wagner lacks minimum capabilities to challenge Russian army'

Iran's Nour News, which is affiliated with the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) of the Islamic Republic, said in a tweet on Saturday that Wagner's action could lead to "destructive psychological consequences" amid the war in Ukraine.

But it added that the group lacked the minimum capabilities to stand up as a force to reckon with.

In another tweet, Nour News pointed to Putin's remarks about internal treason in Russia and his resolve to prevent a civil war and warned of the West's new plot to bring Moscow to its knees in the war.

"Putin's remarks can indicate his awareness of the West's new scheme to create a new front within Russia through Wagner to weaken national cohesion and bring Moscow to its knees in the Ukraine war."
