Raeisi Latin America tour
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi departs for the Latin America tour that will take him to Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. Raeisi says the Islamic Republic and these three countries share common views on opposing hegemony and unilateralism. Raeisi is accompanied by a high-ranking delegation on his trip at the invitations of his Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan counterparts. Before leaving Tehran, he said that the trip will be a turning point in developing ties between Iran and each of those countries. Raeisi noted that exploiting the potentialities of Iran and its Latin American allies can lead to the expansion of relations, which he described as strategic. The Iranian President said he would sign a number of documents to expand bilateral cooperation. Tehran, Caracas, Managua, and Havana are all under US sanctions.
China-US tensions
Beijing has slammed the new US sanctions on China, calling on Washington to stop what it called the unreasonable suppression of Chinese enterprises and individuals. China’s Commerce Ministry said the bans lack factual basis and due process. It added that the sanctions harm the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese entities and nationals. Beijing has vowed to take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and people. The US has imposed sanctions on a number of companies and individuals in China over their cooperation with Iran.
‘US conspiracy’
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has blamed the US for his ouster in a vote of no confidence in April 2022. The ex-premier told American magazine Newsweek that US undersecretary of state Donald Lu had warned of consequences for Pakistan if he was not removed from office. Khan added that Lu also met with lawmakers just before the no-confidence vote. The ex-premier is now confined to his residence in Lahore. He is facing over 150 charges filed against him since his ouster. The government accuses Khan of inciting violence, among other charges. Khan, however, denies this. He says the charges are politicized and an excuse to outlaw his party.
