Slamming US unilateralism
Iran is warning of the US threat to multilateralism, which it describes as essential to international peace and security. Iran’s ambassador to the UN says the US withdrawal from the 2015 deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is a clear example of its unilateralism. Amir Saeed Iravani said other instances include the US re-imposing sanctions against Iran as well as forcing other countries to abide by the restrictions. He said the US defiance of a recent order by the International Court of Justice on Iran sanctions also shows how unilateral acts undermine the UN Charter. Iravani stressed that unilateral coercive measures, including sanctions, run counter to the fundamental principles of international law and basic human rights.
Sudan 72-hour truce
Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to a 72-hour truce after 10 days of deadly clashes. The ceasefire was mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia and starts on Tuesday. There have been several ceasefire attempts so far but none have successfully held. Violence erupted after weeks of tensions over the proposed integration of the RSF into the military. The two warring factions were former allies and had jointly seized power in a 2021 coup. The clashes have so far killed nearly 430 people triggering a humanitarian crisis. Foreign governments have been rushing to evacuate their citizens. The UN Security Council is set to hold a meeting on Sudan on Tuesday.
Russia-Ukraine war
Russia says a Ukrainian attack on its Black Sea fleet jeopardizes the prospects for a deal on extending grain exports. The Russian Defense Ministry says it destroyed all three of the naval drones. Ukraine has not commented on the attack, which originated near the Crimean port city of Odessa, the water area designated for the implementation of the grain initiative. The deal, which is due to expire on May 18, allows Ukraine to export its grain through the Black Sea amid the war with Russia. The UN says it has proposed a way forward to Russia aimed at extending the deal. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would study the proposal, but added that the progress so far is not noticeable. Moscow says it wants Western sanctions against it eased before the deal is extended.
