Palestinian struggle
Iran has reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian nation and the liberation of the Israeli-occupied territories. In a statement issued on the eve of International Quds Day, Iran’s foreign ministry stressed its policy of backing Palestinians’ resistance to liberate their land from the Israeli occupation. Tehran also underlined the need to counter Tel Aviv’s crimes in an effective manner. Iran called on all freedom-seeking nations and Muslims across the globe to join hands to confront the Israeli regime, which disrupts regional and international security and stability. Tehran said Israel’s blatant violation of basic human rights and international regulations as well as its desecration of religious sanctities makes it necessary to support Palestinians. It also called for the establishment of an integrated Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital.
UK economic stagnation
More bad news for the UK economy as official data shows the country witnessed zero economic growth in February this year. The Office for National Statistics says the GDP stagnated and was weaker than the forecast for 0.1 percent growth. It attributed the scenario to strikes by various sectors, including civil servants over pay, pensions, redundancy terms and job security. The chancellor of exchequer has reacted to the report by saying that the economy actually grew in the last quarter and that the outlook is brighter than expected. However, Jeremy Hunt’s statements are at odds with forecasts by the International monetary fund. The IMF had said that the UK would be one of the worst-performing major economies in 2023. The country is currently grappling with 40-year-high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.
US police brutality
US police have come under increasing pressure to alter their methods since the 2020 death of Floyd. The following year, Democratic members of Congress introduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It sought to require federal officers to wear body cameras, among other measures. It, however, did not garner enough votes in Senate to turn into law. The death of Nichols has prompted fresh outrage and calls for change in US police practices.
