Israel Nablus raid

Israeli forces conducted a deadly raid into the city of Nablus in the West Bank. The attack left several people dead or injured. It comes hot on the heels of recent deadly incursions into Palestinian neighborhoods in the occupied West Bank.

Yemen truce

In war-ravaged Yemen, it’s been one year since a UN-brokered truce took effect. Now, the UN envoy is calling for a nationwide ceasefire and a sustainable political settlement. Hans Grundberg said the truce was largely holding, despite lapsing in October. The truce was agreed between forces loyal to former President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi in Yemen’s south and resistance Ansarullah fighters in the north. Saudi Arabia launched a devastating war and blockade on Yemen in 2015 to restore Hadi to power. Grundberg added that Yemen faces "a critical time". He said the military, economic and rhetorical escalation of recent weeks is a reminder of the fragility of the truce. The UN official urged the warring sides in Yemen to sit together and responsibly engage in serious dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

War in Ukraine

Ukraine says its army still holds control of the flashpoint city of Bakhmut despite Russian claims of capturing it. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says Ukrainian defenders are repelling attacks on Bakhmut. This comes after the Russian private military company, Wagner, said its forces have captured the strategic city in what it called a legal sense. The fight for Bakhmut has been the longest and bloodiest battle of the Russia-Ukraine war. Seizure of the area brings Russia closer to full control of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Kiev also sees the battle for the industrial city as the key to holding back Russian forces along the entire eastern front.
