Iran-Belarus relations

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko is in Iran on an official visit. The presidents are discussing cooperation in the fields of industry, agriculture and transport, among other things. The two sides signed eight bilateral agreements to enhance cooperation in different sectors. Lukashenko and Raeisi earlier held talks on the sidelines of the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in September.

China to modernize military

China’s president calls for the modernization of the country’s military to make it "a great wall of steel". Xi Jinping made the call in his first speech as head of state in his third term as president and amid heightened tensions with the US. Xi said security is the foundation for development. He also reiterated China’s opposition to secessionist activities and external interference in Taiwan. Beijing and Washington have seen their tensions soar over a number of issues including the status of Taiwan and the US crackdown on Chinese tech companies. China has openly warned the US that it is ready to use its military to defend its interests.

North Korea missile tests

North Korea says it has test-fired two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine, as South Korea and the United States kick off their biggest joint military drills in five years. North Korea says the missiles precisely hit an underwater target in the waters east of the Korean Peninsula. The country’s state news agency says the test was linked to the US and South Korea getting ever more undisguised in their military drills against the North. The latest joint exercises will run for 10 days. The South Korean military says the maneuvers involve wartime procedures to repel potential North Korean attacks. Pyongyang views such exercises as rehearsals for invasion and has repeatedly warned it would take reciprocal action.
