Australia ‘Invasion Day’ rallies

Australians have held rallies across the country to oppose national day celebrations on the 26th of January and rather mark it a day of invasion or mourning. Thousands, including aboriginals joined the annual march in major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and the capital Canberra. They chanted slogans and carried Aboriginal flags. The annual January 26 Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the first British settlers in 1788. But for many Australians, it marks the beginning of colonial oppression and genocide of indigenous people. Divisions have deepened in recent years with increasing calls to change the date. But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, like his predecessors, honored the day and said the government has no intention to change the date. Albanese plans to hold a referendum in March on recognizing Indigenous people in the constitution. They make up nearly 4% of the total Australian population.
