John Bolton, a one-time national security advisor to former US President Donald Trump, says he is considering running as a Republican nominee for the US presidency in 2024 in an effort to block his ex-boss from entering the race.

Speaking on Monday on NBC News’ “Meet The Press Now", Bolton said he is “absolutely” considering launching a presidential bid in order to stop Trump from getting chosen.

So far, Trump has been the only major Republican contender to officially announce a campaign.

He said he would “seriously consider getting in” the race if Republicans fail to “repudiate” Trump and offer strong resistance against him.

Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security advisor for more than a year from April 9, 2018 to September 9, 2019, told NBC that he wanted “to make it clear to the people of this country that Donald Trump is unacceptable as the Republican nominee.”

Asked when he might announce his decision for the presidential run, Bolton said “it might be earlier than some would think,” but declined to give an exact timeline.

Bolton said it was “un-American” of Trump to “challenge the Constitution” when he suggested the US Constitution could be "terminated" in order to put him back into the White House.

Over the weekend, Trump wrote in a social media post that the nation’s supreme law could be "terminated" due to alleged fraud in the last election in 2020.

“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” Trump said on Truth Social, adding, “Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”
