Iran's foreign ministry advises citizens to avoid travel to Australia, citing risk of ‘arbitrary arrests’

Iran’s foreign ministry has issued a travel advisory for Iranian nationals, urging them to avoid “unnecessary travel” to Australia.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry advised Iranian citizens, especially students, researchers and university professors, to reconsider unnecessary trips to Australia.

The statement cited the “possibility of arbitrary arrests” of Iranian nationals in the country and their “extradition to hostile governments without any reason.”

It further said the “activities of extremist and racist groups” have been reported in Australia, which have increased the likelihood of threats, racist insults and assault “at any place and time.”

The ministry announced that if any Iranian national is detained by the Australian authorities, they must inform the Iranian embassy in Australia “as soon as possible” and “request consular access.”

“Otherwise, under the pretext of privacy law, Australian police and judicial system will avoid informing the embassy,” the statement noted.

It particularly referred to “illegal and inhumane behavior” of Australian authorities in the country’s prisons, which have in some cases caused “long-term injuries” and even “death of prisoners.”

It is worth mentioning that Australia is among the Western countries that have backed violent riots in Iran in recent months since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in mid-September.

Many Australian officials have in recent weeks issued interventionist statements, instigating rioters and fanning the flames of street violence in Iran

Last week, Australia joined Canada and New Zealand to issue a joint statement for the Arria Formula meeting on the so-called Iran protests.

It was followed by an Australian lawmaker, Keith Wolahan, making a provocative statement in support of armed rioters who have unleashed a reign of horror on ordinary civilians in the past two months.

Iran’s foreign ministry in a separate statement on Wednesday said the founders of the Ariaa Formula meeting are the US and Albania who happen to be the leading supporters of the anti-Iran terrorist group, Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO).
