Palestinian on hunger strike

The lawyer of a Palestinian hunger striker says he is set to continue refusing food until Israel cancels his open-ended detention. According to the lawyer, Khalil Awawdeh’s health has deteriorated to the point that he can't move or talk. An Israeli court has rejected Awawdeh’s appeal for release. The father of four has been refusing food for nearly 170 days to protest his indefinite imprisonment without charge or trial. That’s under a policy Israel calls administrative detention. Several other Palestinian prisoners face the same plight and have gone on hunger strikes in acts of protest. The regime is holding around 670 Palestinians in administrative detention.

Condemning Israeli crackdown

More reactions come in after the Israeli military raided offices of several Palestinian NGOs in the occupied West Bank. Nine European countries, including France and Germany, have thrown their weight behind the Palestinian organizations. The European countries also called Israel’s allegations against the NGOs unsubstantiated. Earlier, the Palestinian foreign ministry described the raid as unlawful. It said Israeli forces looted documents and seized equipment before closing the NGOs’ offices. The ministry warned that civil society and human rights groups remain the prime target of the regime because they document its crimes against Palestinians. The ministry called on the international community to provide urgent protection for the groups targeted on Thursday.

Warning of a nuclear disaster

The Russian president has accused Kiev of systematic shelling of Europe's largest nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. Vladimir Putin raised the alarm about the repercussions of attacks on the site. Putin was speaking in a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. He said the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has created the danger of a large-scale catastrophe that could lead to radiation contamination of vast territories. The two leaders called for independent inspections at the site. Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of planning provocations at the plant. Russia captured Zaporizhzhia in March. The facility, however, is run by Ukrainian technicians.
