IAEA unconstructive remarks

Iran advises the head of the UN nuclear agency to avoid politicized statements that would make relations among the agency’s members more complicated. The remarks were made by the spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. Behrouz Kamalvandi urged Rafael Grossi to avoid making unprofessional media statements that are more of a political nature. The spokesman added that such unconstructive statements further complicate the situation. His remarks came amid rising tensions between Iran and the IAEA over the adoption of an anti-Tehran resolution by the agency’s board of governors. Iran condemned the resolution saying it was based on fabricated information provided by the Israeli regime. Tehran also turned off a number of the agency’s cameras at its nuclear sites that had been installed as part of voluntary trust-building measures.

Iraq politics

Iraq’s Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr says he has decided to withdraw from the political process amid a prolonged stalemate over the formation of a new government. Sadr's announcement came after he asked lawmakers affiliated with his political bloc to resign from the parliament to pave the way for forming a new government. Iraq has been facing political turmoil since the general elections in October in which Sadr won 73 seats. Negotiations among political factions have failed to command a two-third majority in support of a new government.

Situation in Severodonetsk

Moscow says Ukrainian forces have prevented evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Severodonetsk via a humanitarian corridor created by Russia. Russia's defense ministry says Kiev has cynically scuppered the humanitarian operation, using it to redeploy troops in more favorable fighting positions. Russia announced a one-day humanitarian corridor on Wednesday to allow civilians sheltering at a chemical plant in Severodonetsk to leave the site. Intense fighting for the strategic city has been raging on for weeks as Russia advances in the eastern Donbas region. Capturing the city would allow Moscow's forces to advance further west.
