In a new report aimed at highlighting “hunger hotspots,” the UN bodies warn that Afghanistan is the new entry to the list of countries at ‘highest alert,’ facing catastrophic conditions. The report says beside other causes, the ripple effects of the war in Ukraine, including rising prices are adding to the difficulties of people to provide food.

At the same time, Afghan middle-class families are sliding into poverty and hunger –as unemployment has been on the rise. Some also say that they are struggling to make ends meet.

Advocates in the country express concern about Afghanistan’s worsening situation, saying the west, especially the US, share a major role in world poor people’s suffering.

The UN Refugee Agency has also called for three billion dollars in urgent aid to Afghanistan before winter, to avert famine and death.

Afghanistan is facing multiple humanitarian crises. Poverty and hunger, in particular, are taking their toll on millions of people in the country.
