"Foreign mercenaries in Ukraine"
The Russian foreign minister says many western officers and foreign mercenaries are fighting in Ukraine. Sergey Lavrov did not offer further information regarding the nationalities or number of such fighters. Moscow had previously said it had killed scores of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine. Kiev has also accused Moscow of using mercenaries in its war against Ukraine. Meanwhile, Lavrov also accused the West of stealing Russian money, through sanctions it imposed on his country. He said Russia is committed to prevent the breakout of a nuclear war and only seeks to guarantee the security of pro-Russian Ukrainians in the eastern Donbas region. He added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky frequently changed his position in the negotiations. The Ukrainians have sabotaged the talks he claimed.
Yemen humanitarian crisis
The United Nations has warned of a deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen that needs to be addressed immediately. UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, David Gressly, said in a statement that over 23 million people or almost three quarters of Yemen's population - now need assistance. That’s an increase of almost three million people from 2021. However, he said a fragile two-month truce which has held since early April could help reverse the situation. He urged donors and aid agencies to take advantage of the UN-brokered ceasefire to scale up life-saving assistance and reach out to more people in need. He said the UN needs around 4.3 billion dollars for its 2022 humanitarian response plan for Yemen. The Saudi-led war on Yemen and its blockade of the country has devastated the nation leaving millions of Yemenis in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
Iran Sweden relations
Iran's foreign ministry has summoned the Swedish ambassador to protest over the detention and trial of an Iranian citizen in that country. In a statement, the ministry said it relayed Tehran’s strong protest to the Swedish envoy over the detention of Hamid Nouri. It added that Tehran considers Nouri’s detention completely illegal and based on propaganda by the anti-Iran terror group MKO. The ministry rejected allegations against Nouri as baseless and described his trial as a political show. Swedish prosecutors have requested life imprisonment for Nouri over allegations of human rights violations back in the 1980s.
