Sanctions removal talks

Iran says the Vienna talks with the P4+1 countries have not been halted and will be resumed later this week. Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said Western governments seek to commit themselves to as little as they may when it comes to their obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal. He noted that Iran, on the other hand, is determined to secure a good agreement within the framework of the accord. The spokesman also dismissed what he called Western blame game on the talks. He said Iran’s proposals are in strict compliance with the nuclear deal and agreements in the previous rounds of the Vienna talks.

Global arms sales

Global military spending has been on the rise with the world’s biggest weapons manufacturers recording a growth in profits for a sixth straight year. A report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says the top 100 weapons manufacturers have earned an estimated 66.8 billion dollars in 2020. That’s a 1.5% rise compared to the previous year. The top five arms manufacturers were all from the United States, including Lockheed-Martin, which ranks first. Britain's BAE Systems is in sixth position and is the highest-placed European firm, just ahead of three Chinese groups.

Myanmar court ruling

A court in Myanmar has sentenced the country's former de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to four years in jail. Suu Kyi is jailed for inciting dissent against the military and breaching COVID-19 rules. A spokesman for the junta said former president, Win Myint, was also jailed for four years on same charges. Suu Kyi has been in detention since the army ousted her government in February following a coup. The junta has also announced other charges against her, including violating the official Secrets Act, corruption and election fraud. Suu Kyi faces decades in jail if convicted on all accounts.
