US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned Haitian migrants against making the “dangerous” trip to the United States, where they are at risk of being whipped by agents on horseback and kept in squalid conditions.

Blinken said on Friday that asylum-seekers heading to the US were not only at “tremendous risk along the entire route”, but also, upon entry to the United States they still faced dangers.

Blinken attempted at a news conference in Mexico City to dissuade Latin American asylum-seekers against heading to the US, insisting that promises of a better life were lies.

"Unfortunately, ... various groups are spreading false information about what possibilities exist for those coming to the United States,” Blinken said, warning, “The journey is profoundly dangerous, and it will not succeed, and we are working to make sure that people understand that.”

The Biden administration has come under fire for its inhumane treatment of Haitian asylum-seekers fleeing from violence and persecution.

Images from Del Rio, Texas showed US border agents on horseback whipping, beating and mistreating hapless refugees.

Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the ill-treatment of Haitian asylum-seekers at US southern borders.

"What I saw depicted, those individuals on horseback treating human beings the way they were was horrible," Harris told reporters after images circulated on social media showing US border agents on horseback using whips on migrants seeking asylum.
