Afghanistan violence

Fighting escalates between government forces and the Taliban in southern and western Afghanistan. Taliban militants now control about half of Afghanistan's districts including the border crossings with Iran and Pakistan. For more on that, earlier we were joined by our guests in the News Review program to discuss the issue in more detail.

US eviction risk

Millions of Americans are facing eviction from their homes as of Sunday when a ban on booting out indebted renters expires. The US Supreme Court allowed the 11-month-old moratorium to stay in place last month but ruled that any further extension would require congressional approval. The Republicans in the House of Representatives, however, blocked Democratic-led efforts to extend the eviction ban through mid-October. The House will now go to recess for summer vacation. This comes as over 11 million adult Americans are behind on their rent amid Covid-19 restrictions. The pandemic has so far infected nearly 35 million people in the US and killed over 613,000 Americans.

CAR violence

Militants in the Central African Republic have attacked a village in the country’s northeast, killing at least six civilians and wounding several others. The Spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in the country said gunmen from the 3R group launched a large-scale attack against army positions in the village of Mann. He said the situation is currently under control and patrols are underway. The 3R is a rebel group composed of members from the Fulani ethnic group, one of several such outfits flourishing in the violence-wracked country. The Central African Republic is still suffering from the aftermath of a civil war that erupted in 2013.
