Canada mass grave

UN Human rights experts have called on Canada and the Vatican to conduct a full-fledged investigation into the discovery of a mass grave at a former church-run residential school for indigenous children. Nine experts urged an internal and judicial investigation into the circumstances and responsibilities surrounding the deaths. They said perpetrators of such crimes should be sanctioned and prosecuted. The experts also called for similar investigations into Canada’s other residential schools. That is while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had earlier criticized the Catholic Church for ignoring its role in running many residential schools in his country. Last week, a mass grave containing the remains of 215 children were found in British Colombia. The school was operated by the Catholic church on behalf of the Canadian government from 1890 to 1969.

Ethiopia famine

The UN humanitarian chief has warned about an imminent famine in Ethiopia's war-torn Tigray region. In a statement, Mark Lowcock described the situation in Tigray as the worst in a decade, saying hundreds of thousands of people there are at risk of death. He urged the international community to act and take real steps to deal with the crisis. The UN World Food Program has already warned that more than 90 percent of people in Tigray are in need of emergency aid. The northern Ethiopian region has witnessed fighting between government forces and fighters loyal to regional leaders since November. The fighting has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands, with many taking shelter into neighboring countries. The UN says food and other humanitarian aid deliveries to the region remains a difficult task due to the ongoing conflict.

India COVID-19 crisis

India has registered more than 120 thousand new cases of coronavirus infections, the lowest daily figure in almost two months.  Such a daily tally has not been reported since April 7th when the health system of the world’s second most populous nation buckled under a record surge in Covid cases. The government has managed to flatten the curve of both new cases and deaths with regional restrictions among other measures. The total infections now stand at about 28.70 million. India has also reported nearly 34 hundred additional deaths over the past 24 hours. That has pushed the overall death toll closer to 350 thousand. Daily fatalities are still high compared to figures posted two months ago when they hovered around 700.
