Israeli regime gets its 11th president
A parliamentary vote chooses Isaac Herzog, a former Labor chairman and opposition politician, as the Israeli regime’s 11th president.
The 60-year-old was appointed to the position in a Wednesday ballot held at Knesset (the Israeli parliament).
Herzog won the vote against only rival Miriam Peretz, to replace President Reuven Rivlin.
The regime elects presidents every seven years, and lets each one run a single incumbency.
Israeli presidents wield limited executive power, making them act as more of figureheads.
In 2015, Herzog lost his chance to become the regime’s prime minister against Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been holding onto the position by hook or by crook for 12 years.
His appointment came as Netanyahu could be witnessing the twilight of his already long-drawn-out career due to his unprecedented unpopularity among both the Israeli public and politicians.
Israelis have been holding regular rallies outside his residence for months on end to force him to resign.
The far-and-wide resentment is owed in part to Netanyahu’s indictment in a number of corruption cases as well as his mishandling of the Israeli regime’s economy and the COVID-19 response. The regime’s heavy defeat in a recent war against the already Tel Aviv-blockaded Gaza Strip, has also given rise to serious doubt among Israelis about whether he could sustain the regime’s illegal existence.
The situation facing the premier is apparently quite different from that of Herzog, who is reported to be almost evenly popular among the regime’s politicians.
During his inauguration, Hetzog hinted at the prospect of Netanyahu’s ouster as the premier’s rivals are trying to put together a political coalition that would unseat him.
"I'll be happy to work with” whatever Israeli political system “no matter” who is at the head, he said, with Netanyahu replying abruptly, "Let's not get into it now."
