Economic issues focal point of Iran's presidential campaigns

The race is getting heated among presidential candidates, as each are given a chance to lay out their plans to Iranians through these televised speeches, covering issues from national security to economy.

The first to show up before reporters on Sunday was incumbent Secretary of the Expediency Council, Mohsen Rezaei. I asked him about his stance toward the ailing nuclear deal and his plans to revive the accord.

This year, the coronavirus pandemic has curtailed election rallies and electoral tours. Based on the guidelines set by the coronavirus combat committee, campaigning will revolve around televised debates between candidates, feature documentaries and speeches.

Each candidate is given an equal time to introduce their plans. Seven candidates are now running for the 13th presidential election, slated for June 18th. Campaigning began on May 28 and will continue until 24 hours before election day.

Outgoing president Rouhani will hand over power with a host of under addressed issues, on top of them is the economy. That's why observers believe the top executive post will most probably belong to a candidate that presents the most convincing roadmap to fix the economy.
