The United Arab Emirates has sparked anger among Palestinians by congratulating Israel on its so-called Independence Day, declared in 1948.

The occasiona is marked by Palestinians as the beginning of their displacement from their homelan. They view the day as the Nakba or catastrophe day.

The UAE embassy in Tel Aviv published a tweet wishing a “Happy Independence Day” to the citizens of Israel, posting a photo of the Israeli and Emirati flags side by side. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu replied by thanking the UAE.

The UAE was among the first Arab countries to agree to normalize ties with Israel in 2020 under the so-called Abraham Accords, a pact brokered by former US president Donald Trump. Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan signed normalization deals with the Israeli regime shortly afterwards.

Palestinians have angrily slammed normalization of ties between Israel and Arab states, including UAE. They say that since then, those states have been continuing to reward the regime and giving up the holy lands.
